What Is Prompt Engineering? Definition and a Simple Framework
Prompt engineering: Prompt engineering is the practice of writing and testing the instructions given to an AI model, including its role, context, task, constraints and output format, so that it produces accurate, consistent and useful results.
A simple five-part framework
- Role: who the AI should act as (“an experienced customer service lead”).
- Context: your business, audience and situation.
- Task: exactly what to produce.
- Constraints: tone, length, what to avoid, and what to do when information is missing.
- Output format: structure, such as a list, table, email or JSON.
In production systems
For business automations, prompts are versioned, tested against real examples and reviewed when models change. A prompt that works once in a chat window isn’t the same as one that works reliably on thousands of inputs.
